Jen Eating at Boonrasa

Strolling in the Financial District of Manhattan, right next to the 9/11 Memorial, we spotted Boonrasa.

Boonrasa - Restaurant in Financial District

After being fed conference food for 3 days we salivated at the thought of a fresh warm meal, but were hesitant to try this unknown restaurant that was completely empty at 6 PM on a Saturday.

Inside Boonrasa

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, we thought, and took a chance.

Best. Decision. Ever.

Not being that versed in Thai food I was pleasantly surprised by their menu. Simply pick a protein and a sauce, all of which were described in great detail.

Jen ordred the String Beans and Beef.

String Beans and Beef

A simple mild dish over a scoop of white rice.

I went with Chicken and Spicy Basil sauce.

To put it simply: it was amazing.

There was spice and a lot of heat, but in an enjoyable foodgasmic way. I must have sighed and said, “this is so good.” at least 25 times.

We also decided to split a Papaya Salad with Peanut Sauce.

Spicy Papaya Salad

Both of us were expecting a refreshing, possibly sweet bite, to balance our meal and it was. Until about 30 seconds after biting. Then the peanut sauce kicked in and

wowza!

I’ve never eaten anything like it.  You’d think the spice would be too much, but it was an enjoyable mix of flavors, and so crisp. So fresh!

Thankfully the woman at the counter warned us just before serving. Even spicy food hater Jen enjoyed it, but she may not have if we didn’t get a heads up.

I LOVED the spice, but some words of wisdom:

When your lips are burning after eating some really good Thai food. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT put on lip gloss.

It makes it worse.

My 16 year old LOVES spicy food. He even eats ghost chiles (bhut jolokia) I, on the other hand, am a spice wuss. The beef and green beans look really delish, though. Reply
