We were in Denver last week to host the annual FitBloggin‘ conference, and after 5 days of being cooped up in a hotel we had a decision to make:

Sleep or Sightsee?

Jen: Last Sunday in Denver was beautiful! Sunny skies, great views of the mountains, but all I wanted to do was sleep. I was working 12-hour days and the bed at the Westin was calling my name.

Roni: THOSE BEDS! That’s all I need to say. Wait, I’ll show you…

Sleeping in a Westin Bed

I don’t think I’ve ever been more comfortable!

Jen: You were OUT! Anyway, I really wanted to see the city because I didn’t know when I’d ever get back to Denver, but I was just so tired.  My daughter (Cammee) was also with me and I wanted her to experience the city, too. I just couldn’t keep my eyes open!

Roni: I felt the same way. We had exactly 24 more hours in this amazing place but I was so exhausted! Honestly, I didn’t want to pressure you but I was ready to go do SOMETHING. Anything. I knew if I didn’t I would regret it.

Jen: I know. Now I completely understand what my father used to say when he was a traveling salesman.  He would tell me he has been to that city, but never saw any of the sights. He would work all day and then sleep. I could never understand how he could be in all those amazing locales and never leave the hotel room. Now I get it.

Roni: I think you have to bite the bullet. Life is just too short NOT to take advantage. I value sleep as much as the next guy but sometimes it’s about seizing the moment.

Jen: I know, I know. It was bugging me all through breakfast and most of the morning. Then, after seeing Cammee sitting on the bed glued to her cell phone, I had a revelation —  I had to get her out to see Denver.

Roni: That’s the spirit!!

Jen: We sucked it up, took showers, and grabbed a ride to Red Rocks Park — what a wonderful experience.  As soon as I got out of the car and saw those beautiful rocks and the great view of Denver, I somehow wasn’t so tired anymore.  I wanted to do more and see more!!

Roni: I felt the same way. It’s like anything in life. The first step is the hardest but once you put yourself in motion momentum takes over.

Jen: It was worth it, especially snapping this photo of Cammee…

Roni: What a great experience for you two!

Jen: She’s my travel buddy.

Roni: I love that! You know how I feel about traveling with kids. My favorite part was spending off conference time with this group of amazing people.

AND getting to “box” jump my way up the ampitheater.

Jen: You’re such a dork.

Roni: I know.

Jen: Momentum really did take over. We spent the rest of the afternoon walking up and down 16th Street people watching and having a wonderful lunch.

I never regretted not taking that nap.

Roni: I knew you wouldn’t!

Jen: I learned (yet again) when you travel to a new city, “suck the marrow out of it”  Do EVERYTHING you can no matter how tired you are.  There is always a Starbucks that will help you get through the day (one on every block in the case of Denver).

Roni: OR you can sleep on the plane!

Jen: Well, maybe YOU can sleep on the plane. Anyway, walk the city or use UBER or LYFT to make the most of your “work vacation.”  Even if you don’t have much time, find a cute restaurant or get a cup of coffee and stroll the streets.

You won’t regret it.

Roni: No, you won’t.

We never do!

Awesome! What a gorgeous view and those red rocks are stunning. That is definitely a place I'd love to explore. I always say there will be plenty of time to sleep...someday. Reply

It looks beautiful there. I'm glad you didn't sleep. When we're on vacation, I'm constantly battling between sleeping in because we're on vacation and getting everyone moving at the crack of dawn because we're on vacation. Reply
